He had an encyclopedic knowledge of obscure jazz, funk, and soul, and, as a talented drummer in his own right, he brought a rare sense of groove to the samples he chopped up on his trusty Akai MPC.

Donuts began simply enough - an idea to turn a good demo tape into a full-length album. It would end up being one of the defining works of Dilla's life. Completed during the year Dilla spent in and out of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, and released on his birthday, February 7, 2006, Donuts gained particular poignancy when he died three days later on February 10th.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0976/0525/5551/files/dilla_5ba04aab-e50d-4ea2-85b3-6fa576c0e275.jpg?v=1787205802
